Pasig–Marikina River Channel Improvement Project (PMRCIP) – Phase IV continues to gain momentum as the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Board approved a 63-month extension for the project on November 5, 2024.
With the extension, the target completion is now set for March 2031, and the total project cost has been revised to ₱57.7 billion.

📌 What’s New in the Project Scope?
(Pasig Marikina River Channel Improvement Project)
The expanded scope of PMRCIP Phase IV now includes:
🏗️ Design and planning for the Middle Marikina River
🛠️ Upgrades and modifications to existing drainage facilities
🚧 Additional structural and non-structural measures to address flood risks

This major infrastructure upgrade is part of the government’s commitment to enhancing flood control, river rehabilitation, and urban resilience in one of Metro Manila’s most flood-prone regions.
🏘️ Who Benefits from the Pasig Marikina River Channel Improvement Project (PMRCIP)?
The project directly benefits several key urban and suburban areas, including:
Pasig City
Marikina City
Quezon City
Taytay, Rizal
Cainta, Rizal

These locations are consistently among the most affected during the rainy season due to their proximity to the Marikina River and its tributaries.
🌧️ Why This Matters: Reducing Flood Risk and Improving Quality of Life
The PMRCIP aims to reduce the frequency and severity of floods along the Pasig–Marikina River Basin. By improving river channels, enhancing floodways, and modernizing drainage systems, the project promotes climate resilience, public safety, and urban development preparedness.
With this extension and budget increase, the government signals strong intent to finish what it started—and to do so with broader reach and improved technology.
This is not just a flood mitigation project; it’s a long-term investment in the safety and sustainability of Metro Manila and nearby Rizal towns.

🏛️ Backed by National Agencies and Global Partners
The PMRCIP is being implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), with funding support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
It's a vital component of the broader Metro Manila Flood Management Master Plan.

🌊 DPWH Partners with LLDA to Support Marikina River Channel Improvements.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has formally partnered with the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) for the use of a designated shoreline area in Taytay, Rizal as a material disposal site to aid ongoing enhancements along the lower to middle portions of the Marikina River.

The collaboration was solidified through a tripartite memorandum of agreement signed on December 14, 2021, between DPWH Undersecretary Emil K. Sadain, LLDA General Manager Jaime C. Medina, and Toyo Construction Co. Ltd. Project Manager Ryuta A. Ariyoshi.
This agreement grants access to a 30.04-hectare parcel of land located in Barangay Sta. Ana, Taytay, Rizal.

This identified site will serve as a backfill and staging area for excess materials—such as soil and dredged debris—collected during the excavation and river rehabilitation activities under the Pasig–Marikina River Channel Improvement Project (PMRCIP) – Phase IV, specifically from Station 6+700 to Station 9+300.

By utilizing this site, the DPWH ensures that dredging and improvement works along the Marikina River are conducted efficiently, with proper environmental management and logistical planning.
The initiative is part of the government’s broader goal of strengthening flood control infrastructure and enhancing the river system’s resilience across key Metro Manila and Rizal communities.
