Traffic along Ortigas Avenue and Ortigas Avenue Extension has long been one of the biggest challenges for commuters and motorists traveling between Metro Manila and Rizal Province.
Soon, a major infrastructure project is set to change that: the Metro Rail Transit Line 4 (MRT-4).

What is MRT-4?
The MRT-4 is a planned 12.7-kilometer elevated heavy rail transit line designed to connect EDSA–Ortigas in Mandaluyong City to Taytay, Rizal.
It will run along the busy Ortigas Avenue corridor, passing through key business districts, residential communities, and commercial hubs in Pasig City, Cainta, and Taytay.

Initially proposed as a monorail, the project was upgraded in 2022 to a heavy rail system to accommodate higher passenger capacity and faster travel times.
The change is part of the Department of Transportation’s strategy to improve long-term efficiency and sustainability.

Proposed MRT-4 Route and Stations
The MRT-4 will have 10 stations, strategically placed to serve both commuters and businesses along its route.
While final station names may still change, the proposed alignment includes:
EDSA–Ortigas (Interchange with MRT-3)
Greenhills
Santolan
Rosario
Bonny Serrano Avenue
Ortigas Avenue Extension – Pasig
Cainta Junction
Taytay Tiangge Area
Taytay Diversion Road
Taytay Depot (near Taytay Municipal Hall)

This route is expected to connect thousands of daily commuters to major transport networks, reducing reliance on road travel.

Construction Timeline
Preparatory works such as soil testing and detailed engineering design have been ongoing. Actual construction is targeted to begin around 2026, with full operations planned for 2031.
Once completed, MRT-4 is expected to reduce travel time between Taytay and EDSA Ortigas from as long as three hours during rush hour to under one hour.

Economic and Community Impact
The MRT-4 is projected to bring multiple benefits:
Reduced travel time for residents, workers, and students traveling between Rizal and Metro Manila.
Lower transport costs due to more efficient public transit.
Decongestion of Ortigas Avenue Extension and other connecting roads.
Enhanced connectivity to business districts, shopping centers, schools, and hospitals.
The improved accessibility could also pave the way for future urban development in Rizal and eastern Metro Manila, boosting local economies and creating new opportunities for growth.

Project Updates
As of mid-2025, the estimated cost for MRT-4 has increased to ₱100 billion, reflecting the shift to a heavy rail system and updated design requirements. Funding discussions and right-of-way acquisition are ongoing to ensure smooth implementation.

A Step Towards a Modern Transit Network
The MRT-4 is part of the government’s wider push to build a modern, interconnected public transport network.
Alongside other rail projects like the Metro Manila Subway and the North–South Commuter Railway, MRT-4 is expected to transform how people move in and out of Metro Manila.
